Best known for photographing dogs, Weimaraners, to be exact, in various costumes and poses (including wearing roller skates, boots, or masquerading as a shy woman in a bikini), American lensman William Wegman has collaborated with Italian luxury label Max Mara to revive his iconic Dogs in Coats series. Max Mara has reissued a limited-edition run of its iconic 101801 coat, a double-breasted, wide-lapelled, perfectly proportioned, and indubitably classic camel topper first created in 1981 by French couturier Anne-Marie Beretta.  Originally commissioned by Max Mara for its 50th anniversary in 2011, Wegman created a series of eight images featuring his signature four-legged subjects in the brand’s 101801 coat, cashmere and wool beaver garment that epitomizes the brand’s minimal and elegant aesthetic. This week, the Italian fashion house is taking to its Madison Avenue boutique to celebrate Wegman’s “Dogs in Coats,” a series of eight Polaroids it commissioned of stoic hounds with soulful gazes sporting the archival 101801. Max Mara is also running a special reproduction of 30 limited-edition 101801 coats, which will be accompanied by special hangtags and exclusive Dogs in Coats notecards.
